Unlimited Backups and Full System Protection

If you are a Unix or Linux system administrator it is likely you will need System Backup Administrator (SBAdmin), a flagship system recovery and backup solution from Storix. Several flavors of the software exists, these are summarized below.

1. Desktop limited edition; for non-single systems and non commercial use
2. Workstation edition; for single or multiple systems that do not share network resources
3. Network administrator edition; which allows system recovery and backup operations between networked machines.

The Network Administrator Edition is perhaps the most powerful and useful out of the lot, as it allows centralized management of jobs and resources. Each machine on the network can be either a client (to be backed up from) or a server (to be backed up to) or both, and a central console can be setup to monitor and manage the recovery and backup jobs between them.

What differentiates SBAdmin from its competitors is its unique ability to perform full system recoveries of data to machines of different hardware configurations (server) from the source (client). This is particularly relevant when you need to replicate or clone machines without having to do a complete reinstall of the operation system and the needed applications afterwards. This unique technology, known as Adaptable System Recovery (ASR) by Storix Inc., provides for restores that makes adjustments the restored data on the fly, depending on the detected hardware on the target restore machine. For example, if differences are detected during the restore process between the source and destination hardware configurations, the software will make automatic recommendations to the user on how best to complete the restore process, such as advising the user of the existence of newly detected disks, or of the automated file system shrinking procedure. As well as doing all this and in addition to migrating backed up data to a new hardware configuration, the backup can be adaptively restored to the same machine as well, this is a real boon for administrators as it allows the transfer of storage allocations on the same device, for operations such as migrating to Logical Volumes or Software RAID from disk partitions, transferring data from different partitions to different physical disks, splitting a single file system into multiple systems, etc.

Although Linux and AIX machines are the primary intended targets for SBAdmin, Storix Inc. does provide support for Windows and MacOS machines, through the use of the SMB (Samba) protocol. This is only possible for the Network Administrator version of SBAdmin of course, as the data is backed up by a temporary copy of the SMB share to a Linux or AIX SMB host first, and then backed up as per normal from there onwards. For restoration of this data, the user can only restore to Linux or AIX file systems, so in this sense full system recoveries are not possible for SMB based shares, but the data is still protected and backed up for emergencies.

SBAdmin also has an encryption feature for backups. Encryption occurs at the backup client prior to it being transmitted over the network. Additionally, it supports an elective Oracle Database Backup feature incorporating Oracle database backups with the SBAdmin interface.

To complete the feature set of SBAdmin, the following functions are also supported; remote install manager permitting remotely managed system recovery; a Web-based interface; support for numerous compression levels; retention policies and new notification; and according to Storix, Inc., offers a performance amplification of up to 2x write and 4x read.

With pricing ranging from $99 for the desktop version to $895 for the Network Administrator version, SDAdmin is available now. There is an additional cost of $395 for additional backup client/server licenses.
